Sixty years of Corvette: Engineering the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Sixtyyears-chevy

Sixty years after its debut, the Chevrolet Corvette is a different beast than the original 1954 model that featured a base price of $3,498 and two available options: a $91 heater and a $145 AM radio. To date, General Motors has sold over 1.5 million Corvettes. Now, the all-new, seventh-generation 2014 Corvette is ready to launch at the end of this year.

General Motors gave us a look at the iconic American sports car at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. It is still a two-seater -- and is the most powerful standard model ever produced in the U.S., according to Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date. (The current generation starts just under $50,000).

Using only two parts from its predecessor, the new 2014 Corvette Stingray is an engineering tour de force. It uses only two bolts from the last generation Corvette's engine. Every other part is new in the 2014 model that's scheduled to go into production later this year.

Powered by an all-new aluminum V-8 that generates 450 horsepower and 450 lb.-ft. of torque, the Stingray uses only 12 horsepower to move down the road at 55 mph. The 6.2-liter small-block V-8 LT1 gasoline engine will get better fuel economy than the current Corvette engine, which is rated at 26 mpg, says chief engineer Juechter. The 2014 Stingray will accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Juechter also says the two-seater will achieve a higher top speed than the current base model which is rated at 190 mph.

The driver mode selector allows customization of driving performance with five choices: weather, eco, tour, sport and track. Excellent brakes are needed in a vehicle that can generate such high speeds. The new Stingray comes with bigger brakes as standard equipment. If desired, buyers can purchase the optional Brembo Z51 brake package for use on tracks.

The new gasoline direct-injection V-8 features cylinder deactivation from eight to four cylinders when driving conditions permit. Variable valve timing and an all-new combustion system are new features in the engine.

Juechter says upwards of 1,000 people worked on the engineering team for more than three years to create the new Stingray. Chevrolet benchmarked the Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R and Ferrari Italia sports cars. Chevy's aim was to produce a sports car that could compete with these speedsters.

It's also the first time that Chevrolet has ever used hollow aluminum castings and laser welding for the body structure. The process allows aluminum extrusions to be cored out, making them stiffer. This results in 57 percent greater torsional stiffness than the current structure and produces better handling characteristics for the Stingray.

The first Corvette offered an AM radio as the only optional entertainment system. Buyers of the 2014 model will have virtually unlimited connectivity and infotainment options, along with GM's exclusive OnStar system. The Stingray has two 8-inch screens, one with touch-sensor control, USB input port, Chevrolet MyLink communications, HD Radio, along with a 10-speaker sound system.

Patrick Races into the Record Books in the 2014 Chevy SS

Chevyss

Talk about an impressive debut: Just one day after Chevrolet introduced its all-new rear-wheel-drive performance sedan to the public, racer Danica Patrick took a NASCAR-prepped version straight to the pole position of this year’s Daytona 500. Patrick ripped off a top speed of 196.434 mph in her 2014 Chevy SS to become the first female driver to accomplish that task, running Daytona’s 2.5 miles in just 45.817 seconds. Right next to her on the front row? Another new Chevy SS, driven by multi-time NASCAR champ Jeff Gordon.

Now, the retail 2014 Chevy SS won’t be quite as powerful as its Sprint Cup siblings, but it is expected to be among the world’s fastest street-legal sedans. In fact, powered by a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 that’s capable of 415 hp and 415 lb.-ft. of torque, the SS is projected to cover the 0-60 sprint in approximately 5 seconds. And with standard Brembo brakes and a sophisticated suspension, the SS will a true all-around performer.

Also in the mix will be standard creature comforts like a Bose nine-speaker audio system, a color touchscreen and head-up display, pushbutton start, leather seating surfaces, ambient lighting, a particularly spacious cabin that boasts 42 inches of front legroom and 39 inches for rear-seat occupants, and a wide range of driver-assistance features, including a rearview camera, forward-collision alert, blind-spot alert, and lane-departure warning.

The 2014 Chevy SS is scheduled to reach dealerships in the third quarter of the year, but NASCAR fans can see it in action beginning on February 24, when Patrick, Gordon, and a slew of other Chevy SS drivers kick off the Sprint Cup season. (The Chevy SS will serve as the official pace car of the 2013 Daytona 500, too.)

“The Chevrolet brand was largely built on the strength of rear-drive performance sedans, yet it’s been 17 years since we’ve offered one,” added Mark Reuss, president of General Motors North America. “The all-new Chevrolet SS fills that void and fills it better than any other vehicle in the brand’s rich history. The comfort, convenience, spaciousness and V8 power make the SS a total performance package unlike any other on the road today.”

Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel Introduced in Chicago

Chevy

The next phase in the fuel-economy revolution has begun: Chevrolet has become the first mainstream automaker to bring a turbocharged clean-diesel engine to the sedan segment, debuting a diesel-powered Chevy Cruze at the 2013 Chicago Auto Show.

“Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel fills an important role in Chevrolet’s diverse four-cylinder lineup, and is primed to win over diesel devotees and compact car buyers with its performance, torque and fuel economy,” said Chris Perry, vice president of marketing for the brand. “We leveraged engineering expertise from around the globe to develop a world-class, low-emissions engine to give U.S. (and Canadian) customers a car that’s both fun to drive and practical at the pump.”

The new Cruze will rely on an advanced 2.0-liter I4 engine and showcase:

  • The cleanest diesel powertrain GM has ever deployed in a passenger car, producing at least 90 percent fewer nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate emissions than old-style diesel engines
  • A significant track record of success in global markets, including Europe, where about 40 percent of all Cruze sales are of the clean-diesel model
  • Outputs of 148 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, enabling an estimated 42 mpg on the highway and a 0-60 time of 8.6 seconds—faster than its direct VW competitor
  • An American manufacturing base, at GM’s plant in Lordstown, Ohio
  • Pricing that opens at $25,695 and includes a six-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, an Aero Performance Package with rear spoiler, leather-appointed seating, Chevy’s MyLink infotainment system, and a five-year/100,000-mile warranty

“Cruze Clean Turbo Diesel is the most sophisticated passenger car diesel engine GM has ever produced,” said Jens Wartha, GM global program manager and chief engineer for the Cruze’s diesel engine. “We merged European diesel expertise with the real world driving preferences of North American consumers.”

Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco gets a new Chevrolet Corvette

Flacc

Personally, the silver, Tiffany-made Pete Rozelle Trophy is nice, but if we were Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, we'd rather have the keys to the 2014 Corvette Stingray.

In keeping with tradition, the MVP of the Super Bowl always gets the cup and the car. But this year, it's no ordinary Corvette.

Flacco becomes one of the first to own the star of last month's North American International Auto Show. The new Corvette has sports-car fans salivating -- and Flacco gets a bright red one. Like Flacco, the car offers super-performance -- 450 horsepower and zero to 60 mph acceleration in four seconds.

It comes to him from Banner Chevrolet, a dealership that was wiped out, losing 650 new vehicles and its used-car inventory, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans in 2005. It was chosen to present the car.

"Banner Chevrolet and the entire city of New Orleans have been through so much since the storm, we felt this was a small gesture to bring the comeback story full circle," said Alan Batey, a GM vice president, in a statement. "With the Super Bowl in his backyard, we couldn't think of a better guy to have the honor of awarding the MVP with his Corvette Stingray."

Banner Chevrolet was of the largest losses ever recorded for a dealership in the United States and recently completed a massive multimillion-dollar renovation with state-of-the-art technology. Banner is the only Chevrolet dealer in Orleans Parrish.
