Chevrolet Spark Most Efficient U.S. Retail Electric Vehicle

Electric range EPA estimated at 82 miles

NEW YORK – The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV is  the industry benchmark in retail electric vehicle efficiency with a combined city/highway EPA estimated range of 82 miles when fully charged and an EPA-estimated combined city/highway 119 MPGe fuel economy equivalent.

Compared to the average new vehicle, the Spark EV can potentially save its owners up to $9,000 in fuel cost over five years. The Spark EV goes on sale this summer in California and Oregon.

“Being able to provide our customers with the best overall efficiency of any retail EV has always been a key target for the Spark EV engineering team,” said Pam Fletcher, GM executive chief engineer for electrified vehicles. “We’re poised to deliver to the market an EV that’s not just efficient, but also thrilling to drive thanks to the 400 lb-ft torque output of its electric motor.”

The Spark EV’s 21 kWh lithium-ion battery pack will continue Chevrolet’s tradition of offering industry-leading limited warranty protection – eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Spark EV will be the first vehicle on the market to offer as an available option the recently approved SAE combo charger for DC Fast Charging. The capability, available shortly after launch, will enable the Spark EV to recharge up to 80 percent of its capacity in approximately 20 minutes.

The battery system is capable of handling multiple DC Fast Charges daily. Charging can also be completed in less than seven hours using a dedicated 240V charge. A 120V charge cord set comes standard.  Charging can be managed and monitored remotely using the Spark EV’s smart phone application, provided by OnStar, which is standard for three years.

"The Chevrolet Spark EV is a great city car which blends technology, functionality and style in an unexpected package" said Cristi Landy, director of Chevrolet small and electrified vehicle marketing. "We built on the success of the Volt and the gas-powered Spark to offer an affordable, fun and efficient mini car our customers will love to drive."

The Chevrolet Spark EV will set an acceleration benchmark for an urban city electric vehicle – 0-60 mph in under eight seconds due to the mating of a permanent magnet electric motor, which produces more than 100 kW (130 hp), with the coaxial drive unit.

The GM designed oil-cooled, permanent magnet motor is the heart of the Spark EV’s propulsion system.  Putting more than half a million road miles on development versions of the Spark EV enabled engineers to make the performance of the electric motor the best it could be by using a bar wound copper stator and unique rotor configuration.

The motor and drive unit are assembled at GM’s Baltimore operations plant in White Marsh, Md. Last week, the plant celebrated Spark EV motor production, marking the first time a major U.S. auto manufacturer has designed and built both a complete electric motor and drive unit for a modern electric vehicle in the United States.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4.5 million cars and trucks a year.  Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality. Rick Hendrick Buys First 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible For $1 Million

Having already dropped $1.1 million on the very first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to enter production, NASCAR team owner and avid Corvette collector Rick Hendrick has now also bought the first convertible version of the car.

The rights to the first 2014 Corvette Stingray Convertible, which is yet to be built, was auctioned off for charity at a Barrett-Jackson auction taking place in Palm Beach, Florida this weekend.

As it did with the sale of the first Corvette Stingray, General Motors is donating all proceeds of the sale of the first Corvette Stingray Convertible to charity, in this case the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute.

As Speed TV reports, part of the deal includes a special ceremony at the start of production of the seventh-generation Corvette at the car's factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky, this summer. Hendrick will be allowed to start up the first car as it exits the production line.

All 2014 Corvette Stingrays shown so far have been pre-production prototypes. This means Hendrick still has the opportunity to choose exactly how his cars are specified, including color and trim combinations. We’d suggest he orders one of the cars with the delicious deep blue exterior paint and contrasting coffee brown interior, which featured on the car shown at the recent 2013 New York Auto Show.

“Corvettes are a passion of mine,” Hendrick said at the auction. “I love those cars so much, and to have the first Corvettes from the new generation means so much to me.”

The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray goes on sale in the third quarter of the year, with pricing and final specifications yet to be disclosed. The car will come standard with a 6.2-liter V-8 engine with direct fuel injection and cylinder deactivation technologies, and peak output estimated at 450 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

Spark EV Electric Motor Manufacturing Begins in Baltimore

Until now, electric motors and drive units – the heart and soul of electric vehicles – have been mostly imports. General Motors today commemorated becoming the first U.S.-based automaker to manufacture these key parts in America for the new Chevrolet Spark EV at its Baltimore Operations plant in White Marsh, Md.

“The era of using electricity to help improve performance and fuel economy is already here and the trend is only going to grow,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president of Sustainability. “Today is further proof GM is leading in the development of electric vehicles that will improve America’s energy security.”

GM engineers designed and developed the Spark EV’s motor and drive unit to provide maximum efficiency and power with world-class reliability. The permanent magnet motor features a unique design to provide precise delivery of power. The Spark EV electric motor will produce 130 hp (100 kW) and 400 lb-ft of torque to deliver acceleration of less than 8 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. The Spark EV will be sold in California and Oregon this summer and sales will expand to Canada, Europe and South Korea later.

“Electric motor development and manufacturing is a critical area of expertise GM has mastered as we grow our portfolio of electric vehicles to address the needs of our global customers.” said Larry Nitz, GM executive director of Vehicle Electrification Engineering.
After refining its expertise in electric motors at a pilot facility in Wixom, Mich., production of electric motors began at White Marsh. Workers at the Baltimore plant completed extensive training on the operation of the sophisticated machines used to configure portions of the electric motor and drive units.

“In Maryland, innovation is something we do well and with our world class work force, we’re in a position to grow Maryland’s Innovation Economy so we can create even more jobs for our hardworking families,” said Gov. Martin O’Malley. “Thanks to the leaders at General Motors, the first electric motors and drive units will be manufactured right here in Maryland. Together, with companies like General Motors leading the way, we must make the better choices to invest in a stronger future: more job creation, more opportunity, and a stronger, growing middle class.”
Conventionally powered vehicles on the road today have a variety of electric motors to power seats, windows, windshield washers and other functions. Electric motors are used in hybrid and electric vehicles to propel the vehicle. Electricity is stored in a battery and feeds power to the electric motor to drive the wheels.

“The motor design was created by American engineers and it’s being manufactured and assembled by American workers,” said plant manager Bill Tiger. “By designing electric motors in Michigan and manufacturing them at Baltimore Operations, GM controls the design, materials and production processes, as well as reducing costs and improving performance, quality, reliability and manufacturability.”

Goodbye, Chevrolet Camaro. Hello, Chevy Chevelle?

The autosphere is abuzz with reports that General Motors has filed the Chevelle name as a trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). For those unfamiliar with car history, the Chevrolet Chevelle is the predecessor to the current Chevy Malibu. Speculation is that GM plans to revive the namesake in order to add another car to the bowtie brand.

Armchair analysts, though, are questioning such a move. Currently, there are nine cars under the Chevrolet name:  Camaro, Corvette Stingray, Cruze, Impala, Malibu, Sonic, Spark, SS and Volt. Is there room for yet another sedan? That’s what the folks over at GM Authority asked in their post. They offered two potential scenarios. The first is Chevrolet will rename the SS with the Chevelle plate in the not-so-distant future. The site points to the fact that the Chevy SS is a rebadged Holden VF Commodore from GM Australia. The Commodore is due for an all-new model sometime in 2016, about the time GM completes its Chevelle filing with the USPTO.

A more radical idea involves the Chevrolet Camaro and the Chevy Code 130R. The latter is a compact coupe concept introduced by GM at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show. The automaker has been mum about it and the other concept introduced at the show, the Tru 140S. GM Authority theorizes that a production version of the Code 130R could wear the Camaro name, while the current one will shift up as the all-new Chevelle. GM, when asked about filing or the ultimate fate of Code 130R, has dismissed such queries.

Chevy Volt Drivers Still Avoiding Gas Stations

Since the Chevy Volt first went on sale at the very end of 2010, Chevrolet’s plug-in hybrid has enabled drivers to travel about 150 million miles using electricity alone for motivation. That’s about the distance from the Earth to Mars.

Of course, some owners are contributing more to that total than others. With its unique powertrain, the Volt can provide an EPA-certified 38 miles of all-electric, zero-emissions driving, then deliver hundreds of more miles of range by leveraging its onboard, gas-powered generator. As a result, Chevy data indicates that, when they regularly charge their Volts, typical owners are covering roughly 900 miles between visits to the gas station. But that’s just for starters.

Texas owner Larry Read, for example, recently purchased his first Volt and reports: “It’s been more than 5,000 miles and I’ve only filled up once not including the dealer fill.”
And Paul Friday, a Volt driver from San Jose, California, has been traveling about 7,000 miles between stops for gas—and even then, he’s only pumping about three gallons of fuel every three months.

Then, pushing the envelope even further is Brent Waldrep. According to the resident of Auburn Hills, Michigan: “I have driven more than 23,500 miles in my Volt in 21 months, and have been to a gas station twice. The last time was in August [2012], and I still have about 65 percent of that tank left. I go about 9,000-10,000 miles between fill ups.”

Which probably helps explain why the Chevy Volt has been ranked as the No. 1 entry in Consumer Reports annual owner satisfaction survey for two years in a row.

“We’ve seen and heard from our Volt owners that they are achieving fantastic performance numbers with their vehicle as many are beating the EPA label estimates,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. “Our Volt owners are showing the performance potential of driving electric, and having fun doing it.”

2014 Chevy Silverado: The New Full-size Fuel-economy Champion

In today’s full-size pickup segment, customers are just as concerned about tow ratings as EPA ratings. That’s the reason engineers made sure the all-new 2014 Chevy Silverado will top its rivals in both categories.

Backed by a brand-new 5.3-liter EcoTec3 engine that makes a stout 355 horsepower  and 383 lb.-ft. of torque, the Silverado is projected to score fuel-economy marks of up to 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway/19 mpg combined, while being able to tow up to 11,500 lbs. (when properly equipped). And not only will the Silverado best all of its V-8 competitors in these key areas, it also outperforms the Ford F-150 EcoBoost model with its turbocharged V-6.
That combination “gives customers the best of both worlds,” said Jeff Luke, the truck’s executive chief engineer. “Customers get the proven power and dependability of a V-8 truck engine, with better fuel economy than a leading competitor’s smaller turbocharged V-6.”

The Silverado’s all-new engine gets the job done with a unique combination of powertrain technologies that includes direct fuel injection, cylinder de-activation, and continuously variable valve timing, as well as a compact, lightweight design. The result, according to Luke: “Silverado’s EcoTec3 technology eliminates the fuel economy penalty that often goes with rugged, high-torque truck engines. With our EcoTec3 engines, truck customers don’t have to do more with less—more work with smaller engines. They can keep the benefits of a larger displacement engine and still get better fuel efficiency.”

And these advantages reflect just some of the wholesale upgrades deployed in the 2014 Silverado, which raises the bar in just about every area of the ownership experience except one: Price. When the 2014 Chevy Silverado lineup arrives in dealerships this spring, it will feature the same base MSRPs as the previous generation, starting from $24,585 for regular cab models.

“The 2014 Silverado is new from hood to hitch,” said Alan Batey, vice president, U.S. sales and service. “When you combine the innovative features of the new Silverado with base pricing equivalent to 2013 models and standard scheduled maintenance, Silverado becomes a great choice for pickup customers, helping them save money when they buy—and when they drive.”
