2013 Chevrolet Cruze Features "Smart" Airbag

Chevy_bags

The 2013 Chevrolet Cruze features a "smart" airbag that reduces the risk of injury to the driver.

GM said on Tuesday the special airbag cuts the risk of "inflation-induced injury by allowing the driver's forward momentum to effectively push the air out and away." The automaker described the airbag as an "industry first."

The airbag is standard equipment on the 2013 Cruze.

"This new airbag technology is a smart way to manage crash forces," said Gay Kent, GM general director of vehicle safety and crashworthiness, in a statement.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety say that airbag-related fatalities are relatively rare.

"The energy required to quickly inflate airbags can cause injury," said the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in a statement on its Web site. "This used to be a serious concern with frontal airbags, but, thanks to new government requirements, airbag injuries are becoming a thing of the past. Fortunately, even with older airbags, most of the injuries that occur are minor scrapes and abrasions, and serious injuries and death are relatively rare."

NHTSA estimates that during 1990-2008, more than 290 deaths were caused by frontal airbag inflation in low-speed crashes. Nearly 90 percent of the deaths occurred in vehicles manufactured before 1998, and more than 80 percent of people killed were unbelted or improperly restrained.

Unbelted occupants are likely to move forward if, for example, there is hard braking or swerving before a frontal crash. These occupants can end up on top of, or extremely close to, the airbags as they begin to inflate.

Volt Voyages Past 100 Million All-electric Miles

Volt

The innovative Chevy Volt is just now celebrating its second anniversary, having gone on sale in December of 2010, and its owners have plenty to celebrate as well. Since on average Volt owners are relying on electric motivation for more than 65 percent of their travel needs, the Volt has now provided more than 100 million miles of zero-emissions, all-electric transportation. Just as importantly, that translates into a total fuel savings of some 5 million gallons, with owners recouping an average of $1,370 annually in fuel costs.

In fact, the typical Volt driver gets about 900 miles per tankful of gas when regularly recharging the car, and refuels approximately once every 90 days. And while individual results may vary, they also can be very much more impressive than that. Consider the performance posted by Volt driver Andrew Byrne, from Los Angeles, who reported: “Since my daily driving is all electric, I only really need to buy gas for long road trips. I drove over 1,900 miles on my last tank of gas.”

Then there’s this from Farris Khan in southeastern Michigan: “My commute is 55 miles round trip, but with the Volt I use 80 percent less gas and save over $150 each month. Plus the Volt is really fun to drive because of its instant torque; driving anything else feels like yester-tech!”

As a reminder, the Chevy Volt boasts a breakthrough powertrain that combines both electric drive and a high-efficiency gas-powered engine. It can travel an EPA-certified 38 miles on a single charge by using electricity only, and can then seamlessly switch over to its gasoline engine to travel more than 330 further miles. Keep in mind, too, that even when the Volt does happen to use gasoline, it still achieves some of the best fuel-economy grades in the country. The Volt’s EPA line runs 35 mpg city/40 mpg highway/37 mpg combined, giving it better city and combined fuel-efficiency ratings than any other gas-only vehicle in its size class. (In its all-electric mode, the EPA rates the Chevy Volt at 98 MPGe.)

It’s no wonder the Volt was just named the No. 1 vehicle in Consumer Reports’ annual Owner Satisfaction Survey—for the second year in a row.

“The best sign of a great product is when your customers are the most satisfied in the industry,” said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. “Volt owners have found the Volt is not only fun to drive, but provides technology and performance where consumers need it most.”

New 2014 Chevy Silverado Pickup -- it's here!

We’ve made it our life’s work to make Silverado the benchmark of full-size pickups. And we’ve raised the bar yet again. When we set out to perfect our Silverado, not a single component went untouched. We’ve reengineered and reimagined everything from interior and exterior styling to ergonomics and performance. It’s stronger, smarter and more capable than ever.

Designed for truck use

The all-new interior is developed entirely around functionality, but with premium materials and the smartest technologies. The new front seats are built for all-day comfort, and a reimagined use of interior space provides more rear-seat leg room in the Crew Cab. From the driver seat, controls are grouped by function and strategically located for optimum visibility and accessibility. And if you want to talk “organized,” new control pods connect you to top-of-the-line technology while the reconfigurable center console features spaces for laptops, hanging file storage, multiple USB ports, and more.

Instruments and steering wheel

A new 6-gauge instrument cluster with an upright design includes the available Enhanced Driver Information Center. It displays your truck’s vital stats like trailer brake settings and coolant temperature. Plus, it works with the available 8-inch Chevrolet MyLink Radio to display the channel or song you’re listening to. Best of all, steering wheel-mounted controls allow you to flip through the displays, activate the available heated steering wheel, change songs, and set the cruise control without ever taking your hands off the wheel.

Performance

Introducing EcoTec3

The 2014 Silverado offers all-aluminum engines backed by 95 years of truck-making heritage and propelled by innovative technology. And now it’s better than ever before thanks to EcoTec3, an entirely new engine family that optimizes fuel economy and power. Featuring Active Fuel Management, Variable Valve Timing and Direct Injection, EcoTec3 optimizes efficiency based on how you drive. And with three EcoTec3 Engine options, there is one to perfectly meet your driving and hauling needs. No matter which engine you choose, Silverado delivers the most fuel-efficient and powerful pickup lineup ever. (Final EPA estimates not yet available.)

Exterior

Look the part

The 2014 Silverado is an athlete, muscular yet refined. We’ve taken the classic aesthetics of Silverado to a new level with a taller dual power dome hood, wider, stronger styling and wraparound bumper and fender flares. The signature-stacked headlamps blend Silverado heritage with modern styling. The durable and smartly redesigned pickup box makes it easy to access, organize and secure your cargo.

Pricing Revealed for 2014 Impala

Chevy

Chevrolet’s all-new full-size flagship—the 2014 Impala—will set sail with a price tag that starts at $26,725 (before an $810 destination charge). That represents a fairly modest $865 bump over the MSRP of the current model, especially when you consider just how thoroughly the 2014 Impala has been upgraded.

Wrapped in a strikingly sophisticated new exterior, the redesigned Impala will offer:

  • Three powertrain choices, including both a high-efficiency eAssist option that delivers 35 mpg highway and an available 305-hp V6
  • A full complement of advanced safety features, like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot and lane-departure warnings, and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Chevy’s next-gen MyLink entertainment system, with a customizable eight-inch screen, natural voice recognition, and Bluetooth audio streaming
  • Upscale illumination treatments such as LED daytime running lights and HID headlamps
  • Standard 18-inch wheels and available 19- and 20-inchers
  • An interior distinguished by premium materials and active noise cancellation for a refined driving environment

The Impala is slated to go on sale in the spring of next year, with V6-powered models arriving in dealerships first, with MSRPs that open at $29,950, followed by the base models with Chevy’s new 2.5-liter I4, and then the eAssist variant, which is still waiting to be priced.

“This all-new Impala delivers on our promise that every new car that wears the Chevrolet bowtie will embody the pioneering spirit that has defined the brand for more than a century.” said Chris Perry, vice president, global Chevrolet marketing. “With the striking new design and the right mix of comfort, technology and efficiency, we have recaptured the magic that attracted millions of consumers to the Impala nameplate for decades.”

GM CEO to Auction 1958 Corvette for Charity

Chevy_delillo_11_26

Selling unique versions of the Chevy Corvette to raise money for charity is nothing new for General Motors—and coincidentally, neither is the Corvette that GM will offer at the upcoming 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. In fact, that car, which will be auctioned to support Habitat for Humanity, is some 45 years old. But don’t worry, its current owner—GM president and CEO Dan Akerson—has kept the vehicle in showroom condition.

“The 1958 Corvette is pure American ingenuity and creativity and the free spirit that Chevrolet represents to me.  I love the car—but I think it’s probably better purposed somewhere else,” Akerson said. “The need for Habitat for Humanity is so great that I thought, ‘Wow, maybe I could really make a difference in a whole different way.’”

Of course, Akerson’s commitment to the Detroit chapter of Habitat for Humanity isn’t a sudden thing either. Before offering up his own personal 1958 Corvette to support the organization, he also made a personal donation of $1 million to launch a three-year Habitat program to serve families in Detroit’s Morningside Commons neighborhood. Proceeds from the Corvette auction will go to the Detroit-area project as well, and there should be plenty.

After all, just 510 Corvettes from 1958 were made wearing the same Regal Turquoise finish found on Akerson’s Corvette, so it’s considered a rarity among rarities.

“The fact that Dan is giving up a car that I know must mean an awful lot to him is very humbling,” said Vincent Tilford, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Detroit. “For whoever buys this classic car, not only are they going to give it a new home, but they’re also going to give new, better and healthier homes to families in this neighborhood—and actually help rebuild an entire community.”

Old and new Hot Wheels Camaro coupes draw big crowds at SEMA

Hot_wheelschevy

Over the past few years, General Motors has used a Hot Wheels display to showcase the Camaro so it should come as no surprise that in debuting a production Hot Wheels Edition version, the bright orange “track” display was in full force for the 2012 SEMA Show. However, unlike previous events, GM had a dual display in Vegas to show off the metallic blue production Hot Wheels Camaro alongside a fully customized 1967 Camaro sporting a similar paint scheme.

When the Hot Wheels lineup of die cast toys debuted in 1968, one of the original 16 vehicles was “the new” 1967 Chevrolet Camaro so for the 2012 SEMA Show the designers were tasked with building a full sized version of that original die cast toy finished in the same Kinetic Blue metallic paint as the Hot Wheels Camaro headed to production.

Chevrolet Brings The Noise At SEMA 2012

In their SEMA booth this year, Chevy hyped catalog-ready performance, with many of their vehicles showcasing off-the-shelf upgrades with the part numbers right on the cars’ placards. In addition to the expected performance heavy hitters like the ZL1 (the gorgeous ZL1 Touring Convertible concept in avocado-skin “Unripened Green” was truly a sight to behold), the General emphasized the trickle-down effect of performance upgrades for their lesser models as well, including the track-tuned Sonic B-spec and the turbo 2.0L-powered Malibu Performance concept. The V6 Camaro also got some love with a track-ready Chevrolet Performance Concept that gave it a 1LE suspension upgrade and the ZL1′s dual exhaust and brakes (6-piston front, 4-piston rear). Also on hand was the last 2012 COPO Camaro and the only COPO convertible, #69 (GM announced Monday night that another run of 69 COPOs will be built for 2013).  There were the celeb-designed bowties, a ZL1 by Tony Stewart and Guy Fieri’s 427 Corvette. And of course, we certainly didn’t miss the Chevrolet Performance demo bays, where booth visitors were offered up-close look at the performance goodies in various stages of installation.

Chevrolet Donates 50 Trucks to Red Cross for Storm Relief

Chevyredcross

Chevrolet today donated 50 Silverado full-size pickup trucks and Express cargo vans to the American Red Cross for use in relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy and other storms buffeting the Eastern seaboard and nearby states.

"It is during disasters like this that we all need to pull together as a country and Chevrolet has a role in that," said General Motors Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. "Making these vehicles available quickly where they can do the most good is something we can do right now."

GM's OnStar subsidiary is also supporting the initiative by providing each of the donated vehicles with 300 OnStar Hands-Free Calling minutes and three months of its Directions and Connections plan which includes turn-by-turn navigation services. The trucks are being pulled from existing inventory at dealerships closest to where they are needed.

In addition to the vehicle donation, the GM Foundation earlier donated $250,000 to the Red Cross Disaster Responder Program, which enables the agency to be ready to provide immediate disaster relief anywhere in the country. The money is used to shelter, feed and meet emotional needs of disaster victims. The money also helps feed emergency workers, handle inquiries from concerned family members outside the disaster area, provide blood and blood products and help disaster victims access other available resources.

"The impact of Hurricane Sandy is being assessed up and down the East Coast and even further west, and the road to recovery will be long for many families," said Neal Litvack, Chief Development Officer of the American Red Cross. "GM's generous donation of vehicles and the GM Foundation's donation of finances will help the American Red Cross to respond with shelter, food and care, aiding affected residents now and after the storm, as they move toward recovery."

Chevrolet Reveals the 2014 Corvette Logo

Corvette_logo

Chevrolet said it will unveil its 2014 Corvette sports car Sunday evening, Jan. 13, during press previews for the Detroit auto show.

While the company is not yet showing pictures to hint at the car’s design, it did reveal its crossed-flag logo, which it redesigned for the seventh-generation “Vette.”

The coming model, also called the C7, is expected to have a sharper, more modern exterior design, but the biggest changes are likely to appear in its cabin.

The Corvette has long been regarded as the equal of many exotic European sports cars in performance, but not interior décor. Indeed, much of current and past Corvette’s interior looks like it was borrowed from rental cars. People familiar with the next Corvette’s design say the interior is much-improved.

For now, all we have to go on is the logo. The crossed flags (one black and white checkered flag and a red Chevrolet flag) have adorned the Corvette since its 1953 debut. Its design has evolved over the years. Chevrolet said the new design has a “more technical, more angular and more swept appearance – in proportion that symbolizes the new car.”

The General Motors Co. unit said it considered more than 100 versions before deciding on the final one.

Interestingly, the first Corvette concept car, shown in New York on Jan. 17, 1953, featured an emblem with a checkered flag crossed with an American flag. Because such commercial use of the stars and stripes was prohibited, Chevy changed the logo to the fleur-de-lis/bowtie design for the production car.

Chevrolet Shares Glimpse of 2014 Silverado Truck

Chevyarticle

Chevrolet said it will unveil its redesigned Silverado 1500 full-size pickup truck on Dec. 13 at a special event in Detroit area. The General Motors Co. unit said the new model will have a “bold exterior design” that “reflects the enhanced capabilities of the truck.”

The company released a teaser image that hints at the new design, suggesting that like its rivals teh Ford F-150 and Chrysler’s Ram 1500, the Silverado will have more chrome “jewelry” adorning its front end.

The new Silverado’s first public display will take place at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The truck will begin production next year.

2013 Chevrolet Spark Test Drive

Bluespark

Chevy’s sprightly minicar, the Spark, is a big seller around the globe, but it wasn’t developed with North America in mind. The "old" GM might have shipped the Korean-made tyke over to our shores and hoped for the best. Thankfully for us, the GM of today unleashed a squadron of homeland Detroit engineers onto the Spark to modify and improve the little machine for the U.S.

Under that short hood is an 84-hp, 1.25-liter four-cylinder. That’s .5-liter more than Sparks have in other markets. "The real goal there was to get a flatter, more useable torque curve out of the engine," ride and handling engineer Nathan Sumner says. The team at GM also retuned the intake manifold and the whole exhaust system to give our Spark a sportier sound and optimized the gear ratios in both the five-speed manual and the four-speed automatic with unique gearing for the U.S. market.

The original Spark was a soft rider and not what you’d describe as a fun machine when the road twists. To impart a livelier feel, Sumner’s colleagues lowered the car by 10 mm and retuned the suspension bushings and shocks. Anyone who’s spent time in a Smart ForTwo knows how unsettled that car feels at highway speeds. Sumner didn’t want that to be the Spark’s Achilles’ heel, so he minimized the nervousness on the highway by first adding 15-inch wheels and improved tires, then fine-tuning the suspension. "Just a small tweak will make all the difference in the world," Sumner says. "I made one little change to the rear damper tuning, and it just calmed the whole car down. It’s really kind of a black art sometimes, finding just the right balance."

The American Spark also comes with an electronic power-steering system. It provides variable assist based on speed, so the driver can dial in a lighter feel around town and more heft through the wheel as the Spark piles on speed. "When you increase the effort at highways speeds, it makes the car much more stable and less twitchy," Sumner says.

GM says it improved the door seals, baffles, carpeting, engine acoustics, and wipers to make the Spark a quieter place to spend time. And the U.S. team enhanced the bodywork for aero. Lowering the Spark and making tweaks such as changing the mirrors gained a little by way of mileage. Sparks equipped with a manual transmission return 34 mpg combined—not exactly hybrid-level fuel sipping but not too shabby.

On the inside, the Spark has 10 airbags as well as a rollover sensing system. A gauge pod reminiscent of the Sonic, the Spark’s bigger brother, sits up front with a large LCD screen in the dash for infotainment. The rear seat on global Sparks seats three people. But that middle seat was deemed too narrow for American posteriors, so a handy console resides in its place, making the car a four-seater. There’s 11.4 cubic feet behind that rear seat and a solid 31.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.

Bottom Line: The Spark is clearly the most practical minicar in the segment. It conveys a sense of lighthearted fun as you slice though city traffic. Compared with Chevy’s larger Sonic, the Spark is clearly a level down in terms of ride, handling, isolation, and power. But for less than $13,000, the Spark is a solid deal.

Vehicle Maintenance - Maintain the Feeling

Chevy_maintenence

Determining when the time is right to schedule maintenance can be confusing - especially when your Chevrolet seems to be running just fine. Built-in technologies, including your engine's Oil Life System (OLS), Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and the monthly OnStartm Vehicle Diagnostic emails you receive, can help you stay well informed on what your Chevrolet needs and when it needs it. For those vehicles without these technologies, refer to your Chevrolet Vehicle Owner's Manual for further maintenance information.

Small-Block V-8 is the Heart of Chevrolet Corvette

Engine

For 58 of its 60 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has been powered by the legendary Chevrolet V-8 engine. Technological advancements have increased output threefold – from 195 hp in 1955 to 638 hp today – as well as reliability, refinement and efficiency.

However, the fundamental architecture of the Chevrolet “Small Block” remains the same today as it was in 1955: a 90-degree V-8, with overhead valves actuated by pushrods, and a 4.4-inch on-center bore spacing.

“The brilliance of the Chevrolet V-8 is its elegant, efficient design,” said Jordan Lee, global chief engineer for Small Block Engines. “The Chevy V-8 has fewer reciprocating parts, and is very efficient and has one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any engine family in the industry. The design is incredibly compact, enabling the Corvette’s signature sleek profile and low hood line.”

Despite a sporty appearance, the early Corvettes’ performance didn’t match their good looks. The car launched in 1953 with the “Blue Flame” inline six-cylinder engine and a two-speed automatic transmission – not exactly the stuff on which to build a sports car legend. That changed in 1955, when the new small-block V-8 engine became available and was ordered by 99 percent of Corvette buyers.

Not only did the new and significantly more powerful engine breathe new life into the Corvette’s driving experience, it could be linked to a three-speed manual transmission that gave the driver an even greater connection to the car. The result made the Corvette a proper sports car, and enthusiasts responded. Sales nearly doubled from 1954 and by the end of the decade, they nearly tripled.

Immediately after the V-8 was introduced, the small-block began a steady march upward in displacement, power and technological advancement.

The Corvette’s first 4.3L (265 cu. in.) small-block engine in 1955 produced up to 195 hp with an optional four-barrel carburetor. Today, the LS9 6.2L (376 cu. in.) supercharged small-block in the Corvette ZR1 is rated at 638 hp (476 kW), delivering about 230 percent more power than the original small-block engine from only 42 percent greater displacement.

Today’s small-block is also remarkably fuel efficient. For example, the 430-horsepower (476 kW) LS3 version of the Gen-IV small-block helps the 2013 Corvette accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds, run the quarter-mile in just more than 12 seconds and achieve a top speed of 190 mph – all while achieving EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 26 mpg.

That fuel economy compares favorably to vehicles more commonly associated with daycare drop-off vehicles than road-course lap times. Indeed, the Corvette’s highway fuel economy is better than the 2013 Hyundai Equus (23 mpg), Volvo XC90 AWD (23 mpg) or Subaru Legacy with the 3.6L flat-6 (25 mpg) – and it matches the Toyota Venza (26 mpg). It also matches or beats other sports cars with smaller engines, including the Nissan 370Z (26 mpg/3.7L V-6), Porsche 911 Turbo (24 mpg/3.8L flat-6) and BMW Z4 (26 mpg/3.0L straight-6).
